MBI managing ED construction at St. Luke's Hospital
Monitor Builders Inc. (MBI) kicked off construction of the new Emergency Department at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford Massachusetts in December 2004. In concert with DAI and the hospital, temporary renovations were implemented prior to construction. A temporary ambulance entrance located off the existing parking deck allows for continuous function of the current ED during the early stages of construction. Five new patient stretcher areas were created to replace the existing unit scheduled for demolition. Another segment of this project is the phased renovation and expansion of the hospital's Med/Surg program. Another segment of this project is the phased renovation and expansion of the hospital's Med/Surg program.

The initial steps of construction included demolition of the awning that covered the old ED entrance. The first concrete was poured in January 2005 with steel arriving on site in April. All this is happening with minimal disruption to the hospital's operations and is on schedule as anticipated. When completed, the new, Emergency Department will accommodate 90,000 visits, compared to the 55,000 it was originally built to serve. An addition at the basement floor level will include a new 6,100 square foot Cath Lab suite and a 1,300 square foot fixed seating Lecture/Assembly Hall. The three-story Medical Surgical Tower will include a 25,500 square foot renovation and 24,000 square foot addition to be constructed above the Emergency Department at the second, third and fourth floors.
