Northern Berkshire Healthcare (NBH) assembled a distinctive team to develop a plan for the future of North Adams Regional Hospital - to keep in step with the new millenium of healthcare. They selected DiGiorgio Associates and Monitor Builders to carry out the planning, design, and construction management services. The entire project consisted of 49,500 square feet of additions and renovations plus infrastructure upgrades and replacements. The planning and design phase began in August 2003. It entailed user group sessions with essential personnel to identify specific departmental requirements. Throughout this process, careful consideration of patient comfort and privacy remained at the forefront of all decisions.
A new, larger Main Lobby with a Gift Shop and Meditation Room was created to set the tone of comfort as one enters the hospital. This environmental theme was carried throughout the hospital with lots of natural light and home-like finishes. The Critical Care Unit more than doubled in size, increasing the capacity to a 10-bed unit. NARH’s new Surgical Services design provided for the hospital's Short Stay Surgery area to be relocated to the first floor and provide four, new Operating Rooms designed for complex procedures. The Emergency Department expanded with additional treatment bays, increased triage area, centralized nurse station and a dedicated X-Ray facility. Last and certainly not least, is the hospital’s new Birthing Center with additional private rooms with hot tubs and new nursery.
