On October 1, 2008, Special Olympics Massachusetts held the groundbreaking for their new 20,000 square foot headquarters located in Marlborough, Massachusetts. This state-of-the-art facility will be called the Yawkey Sports Training Center. Columbia Construction Company was selected to complete the final phase of this amazing project as Construction Manager.
Special Olympics' new home will house executive offices along with educational and training space that will accommodate up to 800 coaches, volunteers, and staff. The classroom space was designed for flexibility that will allow for fundraising and banquet functions. DAI worked with Special Olympics to design a building that would encompass the vision of Special Olympics through the inclusion of their mission statement and motivational adage within its facade. Preliminary design elements included a processional walkway leading to a plaza containing a “Hall of Fame” to introduce visitors to the unique nature of this facility. Within the lobby, SOMA images and interactive displays are planned to reinforce the educational aspects of the organization and achievements of the athletes.
In December 2008, an exciting partnership between Special Olympics and the University of Massachusetts Medical School was unveiled. This collaboration will enhance Special Olympics’ Healthy Athlete initiative by establishing a medical educational program for treating individuals with intellectual disabilities at the new Center.
